What Exactly Are Stocks?

A type of financial security that signifies ownership in a corporation that represents a claim on part of the corporation's assets and earnings.

Stocks are in two primary classes. Preferred stocks typically pay regular dividends and are for investors who favor income. Common stocks represent ownership of a company and may offer more rights and privileges than preferred stock.
