What is an ETF? Can I use it?
Exchange Traded Funds, or ETF’s, are portfolios of stocks, bonds, or other investments that trade on a stock exchange just the same as regular shares of stock in a corporation. There are over 150 ETF’s for investors to choose from.
ETF’s trade like stocks, you can buy on margin and short. Options are available on many ETF’s.
ETFs' biggest benefit over standard mutual funds is their low annual operating costs. Their expenses are not only well below those of traditional mutual funds, but are often lower than index fund counterparts.
A second plus over traditional funds is tax efficiency. When a mutual fund manager sells a stock for a gain, shareholders in the fund are on the hook, regardless of whether they've sold their fund shares.
